2010 Honda Pilot Engine Oil and Coolant Capacity
Adding Engine Oil
- Engine Oil Fill Cap Removal: Unscrew and remove the engine oil fill cap located on top of the valve cover.
- Adding Oil: Pour the oil slowly and carefully to avoid spills. Clean up any spills immediately as they could damage engine components.
- Reinstallation: Reinstall and securely tighten the engine oil fill cap. Wait a few minutes and recheck the oil level using the dipstick. Do not fill above the upper mark to avoid engine damage.
Recommended Engine Oil
- Oil Type: Use a premium-grade 5W-20 detergent oil displaying the API Certification Seal, indicating energy conservation and compliance with the latest American Petroleum Institute requirements.
- Viscosity: 5W-20 oil is recommended for year-round protection, improving cold weather starting and fuel economy.
Synthetic Oil
- Usage: Synthetic motor oil can be used if it meets the same requirements as conventional oil (API Certification Seal and proper weight).
- Maintenance: Follow the oil and filter change intervals as shown on the odometer/trip meter or multi-information display.
Engine Oil Additives
- Recommendation: The vehicle does not require oil additives, which could negatively affect engine or transmission performance and durability.
Changing the Engine Oil and Filter
- Maintenance Interval: Change the oil and filter according to the maintenance messages on the information display or multi-information display.
- Preparation: Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature, then shut it off. Open the hood and remove the engine oil fill cap.
- Draining Oil: Remove the oil drain bolt and washer from the engine bottom, draining the oil into an appropriate container.
- Removing Oil Filter: Remove the oil filter and let the remaining oil drain. Ensure the oil filter gasket is not stuck to the engine’s contacting surface before installing a new filter.
- Installation: Clean the contacting surface of the new oil filter, install a new washer on the drain bolt, and reinstall the bolt. Tighten the bolt to 29 lbf·ft (39 N·m, 4.0 kgf·m).
- Refilling Oil: Refill the engine with the recommended oil. The engine oil change capacity (including the filter) is 4.5 US qt (4.3 L).
- Final Steps: Reinstall the engine oil fill cap, start the engine, and ensure the oil pressure indicator goes out within 5 seconds. Check for leaks at the drain bolt and oil filter, then recheck the oil level after a few minutes, adding oil if necessary.
Disposal of Used Oil
- Environmental Responsibility: Dispose of used oil properly by placing it in a sealed container and taking it to a recycling center. Do not discard it in the trash or dump it on the ground.
Adding Engine Coolant
- Checking Coolant Level: If the coolant level in the reserve tank is at or below the MIN line, add coolant to bring it up to the MAX line. Inspect the cooling system for leaks.
- Recommended Coolant: Use Honda Long-life Antifreeze/Coolant Type 2, pre-mixed with 50% antifreeze and 50% distilled water. Do not add straight antifreeze or plain water.
- Temporary Replacement: If Honda antifreeze/coolant is unavailable, a high-quality, non-silicate coolant recommended for aluminum engines may be used temporarily. Flush and refill with Honda antifreeze/coolant as soon as possible.
Radiator Coolant Level Check
- Safety: Allow the engine and radiator to cool before removing the radiator cap to avoid injury from hot coolant spray.
- Removing Radiator Cap: Turn the radiator cap counterclockwise without pressing down to relieve pressure, then push down and turn counterclockwise to remove it.
- Adding Coolant: The coolant level should be up to the base of the filler neck. Add coolant if needed, pouring slowly and carefully to avoid spills. Clean up any spills immediately.
- Final Steps: Reinstall and fully tighten the radiator cap. Fill the reserve tank to halfway between the MAX and MIN marks, then reinstall the reserve tank cap.
Coolant Additives
- Recommendation: Do not add rust inhibitors or other additives to the cooling system, as they may not be compatible with the coolant or engine components.
